Completing a golden hat trick for Spire Mountain Ciders, Spire Mountain Pear Cider has won the coveted Gold Medal of the North American Brewers Association (NABA).

Spire received the honor at the Association’s North American Beer Awards, presented on June 4th in conjunction with the 16th Annual Mountain Brewers Beer Festival in Idaho Falls, ID.

The distinction was the fourth NABA medal for the Spire Mountain brand in three years, and the second for Spire Mountain Pear Cider.

In 2009, Spire Mountain Dark & Dry Apple Cider won the NABA Gold Medal. The NABA presented it’s Gold to Spire Mountain Apple Cider in 2008. That same year, the Silver Medal went to Spire Mountain Pear Cider. Spire Mountain earned each of its NABA medals in the Cider category.

In considering the award, Spire Mountain’s head cider maker, Colin Biechman, seemed humbled. “Since the public’s expectation of cider often begins and ends with apple, having two gold apple ciders seems almost plausible. But now, having a gold pear, too– Well, that’s a deep-down satisfying feeling.”

Meanwhile in the beer categories, judges took note of another Fish Brewing entry.  In the Double/Imperial Irish Red Ale competition, the Silver Medal went to Starfish Imperial Red Ale. “This award is double pleasure for me,” said Head Brewer Tony Powell. “To have our newest recipe, one named in honor of my own dear sweetheart, win this recognition, well, it kind of makes a guy speechless.

The NABA bestows its honors annually at the Idaho Falls beer festival, one of the largest in North America. Preceding the festival, NABA judges dedicate three days to evaluating entries from across the country and around the world. In 2010, the NABA bestowed Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in seventy-two beer categories, as well as Cider and Soft Drink categories. The year has been kind to Fish Brewing. In January, Fish received a Northwest Brewing News Readers’ Choice Award recognizing Fish Tale Organic India Pale Ale as Best Organic Beer. Now, the North American Brewers’ Association (NABA) has honored Fish Tale Organic IPA with Gold.

The NABA bestowed their Gold medal at their 2009 North American Beer Awards. In a competition open to brewers world-wide, the NABA jury selected Fish Tale Organic IPA as best in the highly competitive English-style India Pale Ale category. Not to be outdone, Fish Brewing’s Spire Mountain Ciders brand also brought home NABA Gold. Judges awarded Spire Mountain Dark & Dry Apple Cider top honors in the competition’s Cider category.

The NABA presented the medals in a June 5th ceremony held in conjunction with the Mountain Brewers’ Beer Festival in Idaho Falls. Described as the second-largest beer competition in the world, the North American Beer Awards brought more than seventy judges to Idaho to rate no fewer than 1,100 entries from around the world.

“These are huge honors for the Mighty Fish Brewers,” said Tony Powell, Head Brewer at Fish Brewing Company. “It’s especially meaningful when the recognition comes from our peers in brewing.”

Judges included brew masters from major national breweries and smaller independent breweries alike, as well as beer journalists and other brewing experts. Working in a blind-format competition over four days, NABA judges awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in 72 categories. In addition to honors for beer and cider, the NABA also presented medals for mead, non-alcohol beers, and carbonated soft drinks.

Proceeds from this 2009’s Competition and Festival benefit east Idaho community organizations including Breaking Boundaries, Camp Discovery, The Snake River Animal Shelter, Sheriffs’ Search and Rescue, and Crime Stoppers.

The 2009 Gold medals are not Fish Brewing’s NABA honors. In 2008, Fish Tale Organic IPA earned an NABA Silver medal. Spire Mountain also won NABA honors that year, with its Spire Mountain Apple and Spire Mountain Pear ciders earning Gold and Silver, respectively. The 2009 Gold is the first award for Spire Mountain Dark & Dry Apple Cider. Fish Brewing’s other NABA Gold came in 2000 and 2001 with back-to-back wins for Mudshark Porter in the Robust Porter category.
